This weekend watch the flocks against the backdrop of mahogany and gold.  Catch a glimpse of hawks as they flood south in huge “kettles.”  Fall is the best time for hawk-watching.  Their migration lingers through October, and right now lots of red-tails can be seen from the Great River Road.

You’ll likely see flocks of seagulls, too.  As they gather in great flocks on ponds and marshes, they are clearly visible from the Great River Road.  Look for the herons and sandpipers which stray into the flocks to feed.  Click here to see a flock near Stockholm.

Savor the wonderful mix of mahogany and gold from the oaks and aspens which came early this year.  This colorful backdrop is prevalent on the Great River Road and inland country roads through the bluffs.

Swing into an orchard and taste the flavors of fall.  While many orchards in the area are suffering low production due to the late frosts in May, the moderating air of Lake Pepin saved the orchards near Stockholm.  They are experiencing a bumper crop of apples.  Stop by, sample the apples, and stock up on your favorites.

Remember to visit Stockholm as you enjoy fall along the Great River Road.  The stores have colorful fall items and the eateries are featuring the bounty of fall in their menu offerings.

Abode Gallery invites you to bring your family to a fun Evening Song this Friday, September 28.

This Friday, September 28, we at Abode Gallery invite you to bring your family to a fun Evening Song:  Village Music and Stroll, when local favorites Doo Da Day, sponsored by The Palate, will perform on the SideSpot stage from 5 - 7 p.m.  Admission is free.  Mingle with your friends and neighbors during a beautiful fall evening.  Many of the shops and eateries will join the celebration and be open late. 

Stop by Abode Gallery and check out the new Cohn-Stone glass pumpkins, the fall Woof and Poof decorative pillows, and new pieces from several of our artists.  Take home a tasty treat from Stockholm Pie Company, and pick up a refreshing beverage from Stockholm General.   

This is the second of a new monthly event on the fourth Friday of the month.  The third and final Evening Song for 2012 is October 26 when local chanteuse Emily Huppert, sponsored by Spring Street Inn, will perform.  Save the date on your calendar and be here to enjoy Emily’s entertainment.

Send your wishes sailing over Lake Pepin this Saturday.

Send your wishes sailing over Lake Pepin this Saturday during the Fall Equinox Festival at Widespot Performing Arts Center in Stockholm.  Buy a sky lantern for $5, write your wishes on it, and send it sailing after the parade.  If water is more to your taste, learn the ancient art of origami at SideSpot.  Write your wishes on a piece of paper, learn to fold it into a boat, and join the Lighted Lantern Parade later in the evening down to Lake Pepin to launch your wish boat.  Stay for the bonfire featuring a flame throwing trebuchet with organic fire balls, of course.

This Saturday, September 22, Mu Daiko Japanese taiko drum ensemble will once again usher in autumn, first with a drum demonstration and clinic at SideSpot at 3:00 p.m. and then with an original, full-length show at Widespot’s main stage at 7:00 p.m.  Attend the SideSpot demonstration for free, but buy your $15 ticket to the Widespot full-length performance.

Earlier in the day on Saturday between noon and 6 p.m., celebrate fall by savoring the delights of the Lake Pepin region as interpreted by Chef Judy Krohn at the Maiden Rock Winery & Cidery Food, Wine & Cider Festival.  Discover delicious wine pairings.  Taste the newly-released ciders and wines.  Sample a collection of Wisconsin-produced hard ciders from wineries around the state.   Find out the tips and techniques for making hard cider and what to consider when cooking with cider.  Make your reservations early; they are required.  Adult tickets are $35 and children’s are $15.

We have lots of fun waiting for you in Stockholm this Labor Day weekend.

We have lots of fun waiting for you in Stockholm this Labor Day weekend.  Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Hall of Fame autoharpist Bryan Bowers will entertain with his part concert, part storytelling, and part friendly chat performance at Widespot. 

Sunday afternoon from 2 - 6 p.m. the Midlife Cryslers will rock the block with 60’s and 70’s music at Gelly’s.

All over town discover the bounty of the fall harvest.  The first varieties of apples are available at Maiden Rock Cidery and Winery, and several stores are featuring fall foods and beverages.  Browse through town and find fall décor, scrumptious treats, new attire, and primitive antiques.

On this three-day weekend, drive the Great River Road, voted the Prettiest Road in America, and have fun in Stockholm.
