Help us raise funds to support our 2013 Dog Days event, “Puppy Party at the Pier,” and area animal shelters and rescues this Saturday, April 13, from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Widespot Performing Arts Center in Stockholm. We have a fun evening planned. Bid on one of many silent auction items that have been donated by local artists, businesses, and community members. From Maria Dudley Kowalski’s original painting which is the featured image for the 2013 Dog Days poster to original art from several local artists to tickets to Widespot events to a sailboat ride to lunch with Mary Logue, choose from exciting offers that you can’t find elsewhere. Take a look at our growing list here.
Enjoy the new music of Patchoulli, a beloved folk duo, and join the release party for their new CD, Anything Is Possible. Their infectious harmonies reflect world-influenced rhythms and flamenco-style guitar. Have fun and smile!
Savor the mouth-watering hors d’oeuvres created by master chef Judy Krohn, formerly of the Harbor View CafĂ©, and the delightful desserts from Ruth Ralch of the Jenny Lind Bakery. Visit the cash bar for a refreshing beverage.
Meet host Pat Kessler from WCCO-TV and his dog Shelby. Last year Pat, Shelby, and over 100 families helped us raise over $8,000. Help us exceed that figure this year so that we can assist more dogs. Tell your friends, too. The event is free and open to the public.
We’d love to see you there,
Mary Anne Collins Svoboda

Congratulations!
Congratulations to the Widespot Players! Their first production this weekend, Love Rides the Rails, a melodrama, is completely sold out. What an exciting launch!
We are thrilled that more stores are now open on weekends. In addition to the stores which have been open all winter: Abode Gallery, Stockholm Pie Company, Stockholm General, The Palate, Sandy‘s Clothing and Art, Ingebretsens, Gelly’s Pub, Maiden Rock Winery and Cidery, A Sense of Place, and Spring Street Inn, now these stores are also open: Savvy, Out of the Blue, Bogus Creek, TansyHus, and Northern Oak.
The weather is predicted to be good this weekend. Get out of town, take a drive down the Great River Road, and see what’s new for spring in the Stockholm shops. Savor tasty food and beverages at Stockholm eateries. Enjoy friendly hospitality at Stockholm lodgings.

We are excited to announce the Widespot Players’ first production.
We are excited to announce the first production of the Widespot Players next weekend, April 5, 6, and 7. They will be presenting the old-time melodrama Love Rides the Rails or Will the Mail Train Run Tonight? Our excitement about this community theater group began the night of tryouts. We had been concerned about how many would show up and wondered if we would have enough to fill the fifteen parts. When over thirty people came to the tryout, we were thrilled!
That level of participation has continued. Over forty people from the area are involved in the production. This all-volunteer cast and crew have spent hundreds of hours in nightly rehearsals and preparation for the production. We have been tapping into the professional expertise and experience of talented actors, set designers, costumers, singers, and musicians.
Join us at this celebration of the Widespot Players community theater’s first performance and reserve your tickets today. Go here to find out more details and order your tickets.

A piece of Stockholm history returns to its original charm and comfort.
Seven years ago my wife Sandra and I became the new owners of TansyHus. As an architect, I wanted to return the home to the comfort, charm, and vision of its original owners. Built in 1904, TansyHus was created as a place for gathering by John Lindgren, the village blacksmith. He and his wife Hannah had three children and many grandchildren. In 2009 the grandchildren shared their memories of the home and several photographs with us. Check out the photos here.
The grandchildren related many stories about the house. We learned that a grape arbor had been located on the down river side yard, yielding an abundance of Concord grapes each year. Grandma Lindgren had peeled potatoes in what is now the downstairs bathroom. Uncle Milton had used the second floor sleeping porch year round. While the main purpose of the small concrete block shed adjacent to the parking lot was a one-car garage, a chicken coop and wood shed had also been housed in the building.
Although the house lost a few original pieces in attempts to modernize through the years, most of the house remains. The large window along with its distinctive stained glass transom still grace the parlor and welcome visitors to the front door. The nine foot ceiling gives a spacious feeling to the entire first floor. The second floor is much the same today as it was originally constructed.
We invite you and your family to enjoy this historical vacation rental home in Stockholm. Fully furnished and recently remodeled, you may rent the home by the weekend, week, or month. Call Sandra on her cell at 626-523-8910 or e-mail smyklebust@tansyhus.com.
