Learn the art of Swedish decorative painting

Have you seen Dalamalning, Swedish decorative painting, and thought, how do they do that?  During Women’s Weekend in Stockholm, learn Dalamalning and take your handiwork home with you.  You will paint a small sandwich board, using a pattern and acrylic paints to apply a basic brush stroke.  Place this board on your table as an attractive addition or take it on a picnic.  Either way, you will learn a new skill and have the results to display.  See one here.

When you look at Dalamalning, remember that the Swedes developed this technique to give themselves something to do and brighten their homes during the long winter months of more darkness than light.  They painted colorful designs of flowers, scenery, and light memories on their dark, wood-grained furniture.  By doing this, they helped retain their sanity and added beauty to their homes.  

The class will be instructed by Carol Bender, a descendant of early Swedish emigrants to the Stockholm area.  Her fascination with the craft is in her genes and her family history.  Carol has gone beyond her initial interest and studied Dalamalning at Norskedalen's Heritage Center in Wisconsin and Klas Hansper of Nusnas in Sweden.  She is an expert painter of Scandinavian folk art, specializing in Dalamalning/kurbit painting and Norwegian rosemaling.  The class will be held at the Samla Rum in Stockholm from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 2.  Sign up by calling 612.729.9333.  The $95 class fee covers all materials plus a light lunch.

Only twice a year can you experience this tour…

Twice a year studios and galleries in our area offer a fresh art tour.  This weekend is the fall tour.  Each location offers a unique experience of particular artists’ expressions and the opportunity to talk to the artists face-to-face.  All offer demonstrations.  Many have guest artists, too.  See new sculptures, quilting, watercolors, art tiles, art wear for women, handmade pottery, oil paintings, weaving, woodcarving, ceramic sculpture, textiles, hooked rugs, jewelry, photography, drawings, monotype prints, hand-turned wood, and fine art books.  Visit as many locations as you can.  Find out more about each here.

See Gaylord Schanilec’s highly anticipated third piece from The River.

At Abode Gallery, we are excited to let you know that we just received Gaylord Schanilec’s third piece from his project The River.  He has titled the piece Morone Chrysops, which is Latin for white bass.  Gaylord pictures The River as a study of the animal life on the Mississippi.  His first two pieces from The River are Pelicans and Short Red Head Horse Fish.  Take a look at his new piece here.

The first framed print of Morone Chrysops, one of two hundred, is available at Abode Gallery along with low-numbered unframed prints.  Stop by soon to see Gaylord’s new print in person and pick up your copy.

October 26  Mary Logue will do a reading and sign her new book, Trees.  Trees is a collection of Mary’s poems complemented with charcoal illustrations by Dodie Logue, Mary’s sister.

November 2 -3  During Women’s Weekend meet guest artists in person and sample handmade, organic products from Mirasol Farms.

Join us for Celtic music and a giant bonfire this Saturday.

Saturday, September 21, celebrate the autumnal equinox with us at Stockholm.  The Hounds of Finn, a traditional Celtic folk-rock band, will perform at 7:00 p.m. at Widespot Performing Arts Center.  Clap your hands and tap your toes as The Hounds perform original and time-honored pieces inspired by Celtic, Americana, Bluegrass, and folk music.  They will also touch on a sprinkling of Irish and Scottish tunes as they deliver some of the finest Celtic-roots music in our region.  Tickets are $14 for adults and $8 for kids 12 and under.  Go to widespotperformingarts.org to reserve your seats.

Refresh yourself at the Widespot cash bar located inside the theater before or after the concert.  Choose from wine, craft beer, soda, and water.   

After the concert, join us in the park as we light our traditional equinox celebration bonfire on the banks of the Great River.
