Add Hallowine to your Halloween celebration….

Door County has a wine just for your Halloween festivities, and we are offering it at Stockholm General.  Named Hallowine, this apple wine is spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.  Warm up the wine before serving it, and the wine will warm up all those who enjoy it.

This is the time of year to relax in a comfortable chair and enjoy a special beverage.  Stop by Stockholm General, choose yours from our hand-picked selection, and stock up.  Build your own six packs of several different beers.  Fill your wine rack with regional flavors.

We’ve remodeled so that browsing the store is even easier.  We’ve added several new items.  The forecast for Sunday is sunshine with temperatures in the 50’s.  Take a drive down the Great River Road, enjoy the last of the fall colors, and pick up some Hallowine and other special beverages at Stockholm General.

We’d love to see you again,

See the flyway this weekend.

The fall colors along the Great River Road are at their peak.  The stunning reds and yellows of the maples, ashes, and sumacs intermix with the vibrant golds and ambers of the aspens and oaks to create a spectacular panorama.  Overhead, raptors are passing through on their way to winter feeding grounds.  Gulls and terns are flocking over Lake Pepin.

In the midst of this feathered flyway activity is the sixth annual Flyway Film Festival offering many opportunities for you this weekend.  Preview over forty independent films, some with Oscar-buzz.  Attend workshops on crowd funding, breaking in from outside of Hollywood, and screenwriting.  Meet filmmakers, screenwriters, directors, and others in the film industry.  Find out more here.

Take a break at our restaurants which are staying open later during the film festival.  Check out the new items in the shops.  Enjoy the film spectacle inside and the feathered one outside this weekend in Stockholm.

Learn the art of Swedish decorative painting

Have you seen Dalamalning, Swedish decorative painting, and thought, how do they do that?  During Women’s Weekend in Stockholm, learn Dalamalning and take your handiwork home with you.  You will paint a small sandwich board, using a pattern and acrylic paints to apply a basic brush stroke.  Place this board on your table as an attractive addition or take it on a picnic.  Either way, you will learn a new skill and have the results to display.  See one here.

When you look at Dalamalning, remember that the Swedes developed this technique to give themselves something to do and brighten their homes during the long winter months of more darkness than light.  They painted colorful designs of flowers, scenery, and light memories on their dark, wood-grained furniture.  By doing this, they helped retain their sanity and added beauty to their homes.

The class will be instructed by Carol Bender, a descendant of early Swedish emigrants to the Stockholm area.  Her fascination with the craft is in her genes and her family history.  Carol has gone beyond her initial interest and studied Dalamalning at Norskedalen's Heritage Center in Wisconsin and Klas Hansper of Nusnas in Sweden.  She is an expert painter of Scandinavian folk art, specializing in Dalamalning/kurbit painting and Norwegian rosemaling.  The class will be held at the Samla Rum in Stockholm from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 2.  Sign up by calling 612.729.9333.  The $95 class fee covers all materials plus a light lunch.

We will also have Katherine Kennedy demonstrating Swedish huck weaving and selling her huck weaving kits Saturday, November 2, from noon to 3 p.m. Find out more about Katherine's work here.

Register for Carol’s class and mark your calendar to join us Women’s Weekend, November 2.
